It has been quite a fertile month. Of our friends and family in the past 4 weeks have brought no less than 9 babies brought into the world.
I couldn’t be happier for the growing families, but I have to admit to feeling a little overwhelmed with the number of baby gifts that needed to be made. I actually started to panic and think perhaps a hand-knit hat would be good enough. But, of course, I couldn’t give 2 sweaters but then give only hats. So, sweaters it will be!
I chose to use Berroco’s Comfort, a nylon and acrylic blend. It feels soft and knits up beautifully.
Here is my top down, seamless newborn-3 mo size sweater pattern:
Tools/Materials
1 skein Berroco Comfort
1 size 10 circular needle (used circular to accommodate the high number of stitches)
1 set of 4, size 10 Double pointed needles
Abbreviations:
CO – cast on
st (s) – stitch (es)
K – Knit
P – Purl
PM – Place Marker
SM – Slip Marker
K1f/b – Knit one stitch in front and in back (increase stitch)
inc – increase
RS – right side
Gauge 4 sts/1″ on size 10
CO 38 sts.
Knit 3 rows, on the last row, place markers as follows: K8, PM, K5, PM, K12, PM, K5, PM, K8
NOTE: The first and last 3 sts of each row are to be knit.
Increase rows are as follows:
Row 1: [K to 1 st before first marker, K1f/b, SM, K1f/b] 4 times, K to end. (8 inc sts made)
Row 2: K3, P to last 3 sts, K3
Repeat the previous 2 rows 11 times (106 sts total: 19 each front, 27 each sleeve, 34 back)
Separate sleeves:
Next row: K to first marker. Remove marker, place next 27 sts (sleeve sts) onto waste yarn, remove marker. CO 1 st and knit to next marker. Remove marker, place next 27 sts (2nd sleeve sts) onto waste yarn, remove marker. CO 1 st and knit to end.
Next row: K3, P to last 3 sts, K3
Work in stockinette stitch for an additional 27 rows, ending with RS row.
Knit the next 4 rows and BO loosely.
Working the Sleeves:
From the waste yarn slip sts onto double pointed needles (9, 9, 9)
Begin a new working yarn starting at the underarm. Knit the first full round, and pick up the 1 CO st from the underarm. (28 sts total)
Knit 19 more rounds.
Purl one round.
Knit one round.
Purl one round.
BO loosely.
Repeat for second sleeve.
